OVERVIEW

Seul Choix Point Lighthouse stands on the northern shore of Lake Michigan in Schoolcraft County and has operated as a navigation light since the 1890s. The current tower was first lit in 1895 and was automated in 1972.

Its paranormal reputation centers on a figure commonly identified as Captain Joseph Willie Townsend. Visitors and caretakers have reported cigar smoke, moving furniture, faces in mirrors, footsteps and other activity in the keeper’s residence.

The lighthouse’s documented maritime history is strong. The identification of a specific ghost as Townsend is much harder to establish and should remain a later interpretive tradition.

STORY / LEGEND

The best-known haunting story says Captain Joseph Willie Townsend died at or near Seul Choix Point and continues to occupy the keeper’s house. The smell of cigar smoke is frequently attributed to him, along with moved objects, footsteps and an unseen male presence.

Some visitors report hazy faces in mirrors, doors or furniture moving, and sensations of being watched. The legend often presents Townsend as possessive of particular rooms.

Other stories attach additional spirits to the property, including former keepers, family members and a midwife. As the site became known for hauntings, many independent experiences were gradually organized into a cast of named historical ghosts.

ORIGIN / STORY DEVELOPMENT

The haunting tradition appears to have grown alongside preservation and public access, when the keeper’s residence shifted from working station to historic museum space.

Named-ghost traditions gave ambiguous experiences a historical identity. Captain Townsend became the central figure because his story fit the setting, but that association should remain folklore rather than forensic identification.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Seul Choix Point projects into northern Lake Michigan and historically offered shelter along a difficult stretch of coast. The name is commonly translated from French as ‘only choice,’ reflecting the bay’s usefulness as refuge.

The U.S. Lighthouse Service established the station in 1892. The present brick conical tower was first lit in 1895 with a third-order Fresnel lens.

The station remained staffed for decades and was later modernized. In 1972 the light was automated, and full-time Coast Guard care ended shortly afterward.

The State of Michigan acquired the property in 1977. The Gulliver Historical Society formed in 1987 and made preservation of the lighthouse its central project.

The property was added to state and national historic registers in 1988. Restoration continued through the 1990s, and the site developed museums, tower tours and a research library.

The lighthouse remains an operational aid to navigation and is owned by the State of Michigan while being operated as a historic site by the Gulliver Historical Society.

Visitors and staff have reported the odor of cigar smoke in areas where no smoking source is apparent, along with footsteps, furniture movement and unusual activity in mirrors.

The male presence is frequently identified as Captain Townsend, but the sensory report and the historical identification should be treated as two separate claims.
