Staley Road near New Carlisle is associated with one of Ohio's many “Crybaby Bridge” traditions. The story says visitors can hear the cries of an unseen infant or child near a bridge or creek crossing, usually after dark. Versions supply different tragedies to explain the sound, but no single historical death has been securely established as the source of the legend.

STORY / LEGEND

The core legend says that a baby or young child can be heard crying near the Staley Road bridge even though no child is present. As with other Crybaby Bridge stories, the phenomenon is often supposed to occur late at night or after a visitor stops near the crossing.

Explanations vary. Some versions describe a mother losing or killing a child; others involve an accident, drowning or abandonment. More elaborate legend-tripping rituals may instruct visitors to park, turn off headlights, call out, or wait for a sound or sign.

Those rituals are part of the folklore, not recommended behavior. Stopping on a dark rural road or bridge creates a genuine traffic hazard, and neighboring land may be private property.
