STORY / LEGEND

The Swanton story is one local chapter of a much larger tornado disaster. It should remain separate enough to preserve town-specific destruction while cross-linking the regional Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak entry.

ORIGIN / STORY DEVELOPMENT

A documented regional tornado outbreak left distinct local disaster histories across northwest Ohio, including severe destruction at Swanton.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The storm occurred during the late-March 1920 tornado outbreak affecting several Midwestern states. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library photographic collection includes a photograph cataloged as damage at a Swanton gas station on March 29, 1920. Another Rudolph Gartner photograph documents collapsed brick buildings. These records establish extensive local destruction, although the photographs alone do not establish the complete path, strength or number of casualties.

REPORTED EXPERIENCES

Contemporary accounts describe severe structural damage and widespread destruction through the Swanton area.

ALTERNATE VERSIONS

Town-specific damage accounts and broader outbreak summaries sometimes become blended.

MORBID FACTS

Brick walls were reduced to rubble. Period photographs preserve the wreckage of buildings in Swanton after the 1920 tornado, with the damage documented in the local library’s historical collection.
